Exams. I just can’t figure out why we have to give exams. Is it because we don’t believe ourselves that we know the concepts or the teachers don’t believe in their own teaching.
We are taught that we should believe ourselves and others. And yet, the whole education system doesn’t follow this.
Okay, exams may be necessary sometimes, but the stress they cause is like hell for students. Think about it, you know the concept, so why is there any need to ask? It really doesn’t make sense. Many students forget things and many basic concepts just because of the fear of exams. Really, is that what they are meant for? To discourage students? To make them feel that some of them are superior and other inferiors?
There are par shelties in class rooms just because one student scores well in the exam, while the other just scores badly because of the fear. It isn’t fair. Tell me, is it?
One particular thing I remember my principal saying when he came to our class – “Why have you taken science if you score badly? Why didn’t you take commerce or arts? They are good for the students of your kind.”
Did I just hear “kind”. Now, what does that mean? And, are you saying that commerce and arts are bad because it requires less percentage of marks to get admission there? We don’t need this kind of principal.
May be a student is not able to remember an answer just because of the fear of the teacher that teaches him. The same thing happened with my friend.
Before our Physics exam, everyone was studying and was asking vague questions to each other. Usually I ignore these fucking stupids (who unfortunately call themselves intelligent), but that day I also got a bit into them and became tensed. But I managed to ignore them somehow. But my friend couldn’t. As the exam started we all started writing, but he got blank and even forgot the basics.
As a result he got 10 out of 40. And the teacher was like – “You don’t know anything! See, you’ve gone wrong even in basic things!” They tell us to understand their problems, why can’t they try to understand ours?
Education system in India sucks. So don’t take it too seriously.

Well there’s something I’d like to add to this!
As far as i know Exams were created for “SELF ASSESSMENT!” and their purpose was to tell you how much you know!
But unfortunately they have just become a medium for “comparison” between students! <specially in the GREAT INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM!!!!!" huh!

I am confused!! Surely, the discrimination on the basis of marks ain’t a good thing, n students are not motivated or inspired to be adventurous at most classes, but there are plus points about our educational systems too!
Yea, sure, everything has its pros and cons. But our education system has so many cons, it’s hard to look at pros. And the cons are yet ignored, making every citizen blind.

I never thought about it actually but after reading your post I did. yes exams many times fail to do what they are supposed to do as you have pointed out.but as I could think of it exams are conducted not because students do not know enough or because of lack of trust, I think the main reason is to grade people – when we are so many aspiring for the same thing, we need to be graded isn’t it ? Otherwise it will be difficult to decide as to who will get the grapes
though we can certainly think over the pattern of teaching, education and exams because they also do a lot of bad

Okay, I’m getting your point. Seriously, our education system focuses (or rather concentrates?) on examination. Each and every topic that you see in the texts are given so that they can be learnt for examination’s sake but not for knowledge’s sake. This kinda sucks, isn’t it Niharika?

Don’t concentrate on the marks…they are for society!…concentrate on knowledge, that’s for yourself…concentrate on seeing things holistically and learn to argue/think against things you very truly believe is true…this will help you look at both sides of a coin…helps you stay neutral and knowledged…this is what I tell my students everyday!
No one will look at your marks…they look at you, so improve yourself and the marks improve too…if they don’t, no worries…there are hundreds of other things one can earn money from!
Wow! Exactly!! This is the way we should study. Ignore marks, ignore those dull teachers who want marks!

There is marked change in exam systems than & now and Mr Sibbal is coming out with many more reforms for good. Just as corporal punishment is vanishing now , the present system is bound to change .

Yes, there indeed is a change in exam patterns, but for the worse. When we heard about that board examinations will not be compulsory and all, we all thought that it was a good idea, isn’t it? But have you taken the opinion of the students who are facing this CCE pattern?
Sure, there is no pressure for only 1 examination, but now there’s double pressure for every small examination that is held. That’s even more bad for students, as I have come to know from my friends.
We still need many changes.
you are right.our education system needs a lot of change..students talent should not entirely depend upon the marks,some may mug up and reproduce without understanding the concept..a system with both practical application and theory with reasoning would help a lot!

Wow, another thing I hate is the assumption that only poor students take commerce or arts.
You should see the way people look at me when they hear that the class 10 topper shifted to arts after 4 months of science…most people fail to get the simple point that I like those subjects better.

Yup, it’s the same all over the world. And a huge change is needed. Instead of exams we can introduce something like “free thinking”, which surely doesn’t happen in the schools these days.
